Collaboration

At the end of the first full session with Year 8 students it became apparent that they have a slighly skewed idea about collaboration. They appear to think that collaborating on a wiki is about everyone working on the same page at the same time - sometimes on the same computer at the same time. They need to understand that collaborating happens when the group has a common goal - to produce a brilliant wiki - and everyone can contribute to this by working on their own sometimes. Indeed it is really helpful if the group co-ordinates who does what at the start of a session. I'll be posting some Group/Individual icons like these on the News page where I post their tasks for the week and see if that helps this afternoon...
The icons helped a little this afternoon - I'm still not sure if they have really got their heads round this. Still I mustn't be too downhearted, after all this project is mainly about collaboration. If they hadn't needed to work on their collaboration skills I wouldn't be spending so much time and effort enabling it...
